What to do when your Ontario driver record is wrong
Start by working out which kind of error it is, because that decides who can fix it. The Ministry of Transportation holds the record but it does not decide what goes on it: convictions arrive from the courts, so a conviction listed in error is corrected by going back to the court that registered it, while an error in your identification details is the ministry's own.
First, get the record you are disputing
Order a copy and read it against what you believe happened, entry by entry. Note the offence date rather than the conviction date on anything you are querying - Ontario's demerit clock runs from the offence date, and a great many "errors" turn out to be that difference.
Check the obvious things before assuming a mistake: a conviction can be registered weeks or months after the ticket was paid, and points can be absent from a total while the conviction is still listed, because the two are on different clocks.
If a conviction is wrong
A conviction on your record came from a court. The ministry records what it is sent; it does not adjudicate the underlying charge and cannot remove a conviction because you disagree with it. That makes the court that dealt with the charge the place to start, and the record itself the evidence you bring.
This is also why "remove a conviction from my record" is usually the wrong framing. A conviction that was correctly entered stays until its own clock runs out - three years on the 3-year record for Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code convictions.
If your identification details are wrong
Name, date of birth and licence details are the ministry's own data rather than a court's, and correcting them is a ServiceOntario matter. Expect to have to show documents supporting the correct value.
What we cannot do about it
Nothing, and it is worth being direct about that. We order a copy of the record; we do not hold it, cannot edit it and have no channel to the ministry that you do not have. Anyone offering to clean up a driving record for a fee is either describing the ordinary court process or describing something that does not exist.
Common questions
Can the ministry remove a conviction if I ask?
The ministry records convictions it receives from the courts. Whether a conviction should have been registered is a question for the court that dealt with the charge.
How long does a correction take to appear?
We have not found a published service standard for this on a ministry page, so we do not quote one.
Will ordering a new copy show the correction?
The record you order reflects the ministry's data at the moment of the search, so a correction that has reached the ministry will appear on a record ordered afterwards.
