What is a driver's abstract? The Ontario driving record, explained

A driver's abstract is the Ontario Ministry of Transportation's own record of your driving history, and "abstract" and "driving record" are two names for the same thing. The ministry's paperwork says "driver record"; its ordering system says "Statement of Driving Record"; almost everyone else says "abstract". Nothing about what you receive changes depending on which word you used to find it.

One document, five names

ServiceOntario's page is titled "Get a driving record". Form SR-LC-112, the paper application, calls the same product a "3 Year Driver Record Search". The ministry's own online ordering system heads the page "Statement of Driving Record". People say "abstract". Outside Canada, and in most software that handles these, the term is "motor vehicle record" or MVR.

This matters more than it sounds, because the different names are attached to different things being sold. Ontario does not have one driving record; it has five, and they differ in how far back they reach and in who is allowed to order them. Asking for "an abstract" without saying which one is how people end up with the wrong document.

The five Ontario records, in the ministry's own words

Form SR-LC-112 lists them: a Driver Licence History, a 3 Year Driver Record Search, a 5 Year Driver Record Search, an Extended Driver Record Search, and a Freedom of Information Driver Record Search. Each comes in a certified and a non-certified version.

The 3-year record is the ordinary one and the only one issued instantly online. The Driver Licence History is not a driving record at all in the sense people mean - it is the history of the licence itself, including every address the ministry has held for you - and the ministry restricts it to the driver, law enforcement and specific government bodies. The Extended search always includes an address and is restricted for that reason. The Freedom of Information version costs $48 non-certified and is available only to the driver, a Crown Attorney's office, or law enforcement with a court order.

So the practical answer to "which one do I need" is almost always the 3-year record, and the practical trap is that the other four sound more thorough. What the 3-year record actually shows is the question worth asking before ordering anything longer.

Why Ontario is not like the other provinces here

Ontario needs one thing to produce a 3-year record: the driver's licence number. No consent form, no witness, no notarisation. That is unusual. Alberta requires a signed consent form witnessed at a registry agent before anyone can pull a record on another person; several US states bind the request to an account only the driver can create.

The consequence is specific to Ontario: the ministry states plainly that anyone can order a 3-year driver record if they provide a driver's licence number. It is the record type that is restricted, not the requester - and only for the records that carry an address.

Common questions

Is an abstract different from a driving record?

No. They are two words for the same document. Ontario's own paperwork uses "driver record" and its ordering system uses "Statement of Driving Record"; "abstract" is the common usage.

Is a CVOR abstract the same thing?

No. CVOR is the Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration system. Its carrier records are about a company's safety record; its driver abstract is a five-year record of a driver's collisions, safety-related offences, convictions and inspections while operating a commercial vehicle in Ontario. The ministry sells the driver abstract uncertified, and it is a separate product from the 3-year driver record.

Does the abstract show my licence photo or address?

The 3-year record does not include your address - the ministry says so explicitly. The records that do carry an address are restricted to the driver themselves or to an authorised requestor holding a signed contract with the ministry.
